Montgomery, Ala. — The Alabama Women’s Commission held its quarterly meeting in Montgomery on Thursday, October 23, 2025, where members elected new officers to lead the Commission’s work in Fiscal Year 2026. Representative Barbara Drummond of Mobile was elected Chair, and Jesalyn McCurry of Birmingham was elected Vice Chair.
Rep. Drummond brings a distinguished record of public service, civic leadership, and community advocacy to her new role. A lifelong Mobilian and former journalist with the Mobile Press-Register, she has spent her career advancing fairness, opportunity, and progress for Alabama’s communities. Her service includes over two decades in journalism, leadership roles with the Mobile County Commission and City of Mobile, and more than ten years in the Alabama House of Representatives. She currently serves as Chair of the Mobile Area Water and Sewer Board and continues to champion legislation promoting public health, small business opportunity, and neighborhood revitalization.
Vice Chair Jesalyn McCurry serves as Conservation Manager for Southern Company and has over 24 years of experience in the electric utility industry. With a background in journalism and an MBA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she has led national communications initiatives, managed regulatory and public affairs strategy, and contributed to the book Innovative Solutions. McCurry is an active community volunteer and literacy advocate, serving organizations including the YWCA of Central Alabama, Childcare Resources, and M-Power Ministries.
Following the meeting, Commission members visited the soon to be unveiled Helen Keller and Rosa Parks statues at the Alabama State Capitol. The Alabama Women’s Commission congratulates the Alabama Women’s Tribute Statue Commission for their six years of dedicated work to make these inspiring tributes a reality, honoring two of Alabama’s most influential women in history.
The Alabama Women’s Commission serves as a continuing vehicle for the determination of effective policy and legislation impacting women and families in Alabama. The Commission studies issues affecting women across the state and makes recommendations to the Governor and Legislature for constructive action.
