Improving Access to Caregiving Supports for Alabama Women
The Alabama Women’s Commission is launching a new research initiative focused on improving access to caregiving supports for women across Alabama.
Women disproportionately serve as caregivers for aging adults, individuals with disabilities, and other dependents requiring ongoing support. While many caregiving-related programs exist across state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community partners, women often face barriers in awareness, navigation, and coordination of services.
This Year 1 grant will focus on understanding those barriers and identifying system-level improvements.
Purpose of the Grant
The 2026–2027 Research & Innovation Grant will fund one research-focused project to:
- Map existing caregiving resources in Alabama
- Identify service gaps and navigation barriers
- Examine how caregivers move through current systems
- Analyze the mental health and workforce impacts of caregiving responsibilities
This is a research and systems-analysis grant. It does not fund direct services or program implementation.

Definition of Caregiver

- Adult family members or informal caregivers age 18+ providing care to individuals 60+
- Adult family members or informal caregivers age 18+ providing care to individuals of any age with disabilities or chronic health conditions
- Adult family members or informal caregivers age 18+ providing care to other dependents requiring significant ongoing support
- Older relatives (not parents) age 55+ providing care to children under 18
Consistent with the Commission’s focus, particular attention will be given to the experiences of women serving in these caregiving roles.
