The Alabama Women’s Commission is excited to share the findings of a report commissioned by the Commission in 2007 in an effort to highlight and better understand issues most relevant to Alabama’s women with children age one (1) and below. In doing so, we have uncovered some surprising trends and are illuminating others that we believe will be of interest to Alabama’s citizens and leadership. The issues which emerge as most significant for the chosen population are: 1) diagnosis and treatment of postpartum depression; 2) lack of equitable access to high-quality child care; and 3) disproportionately high rates of infant mortality.
