Alabama Women's Commission

General History

The Alabama Women’s Commission, established in 1971, by Act of the Alabama Legislature, is a continuing vehicle for the determination of effective policy and legislation in areas affecting Alabama’s women. The commission is composed of three members of the House of Representatives, appointed by the Speaker of the House; two members of the Senate, appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate; and 10 members appointed by the Governor.

Purpose

The purpose of the Commission, as provided in 41-9-413, Code of Alabama 1975, is to improve and advance the lives of women in the State of Alabama. The Commission may study, make recommendations, educate, and promote constructive action on issues related to women which should include, but are not limited to, the following: economic development, education, employment, health, legal rights, political participation, and the quality of individual and family life.

The areas of responsibility may include:

  • To create public awareness and understanding of the responsibilities, needs, potentials, and contributions of women and their roles in the changing society;
  • To research, assemble, analyze and disseminate pertinent data and educational materials relating to activities and programs which will assist in meeting the needs of women;
  • To institute, conduct, and/or support educational and other programs, meetings, conferences, hearings, forums, discussion groups to address matters of concern to the women of the State;
  • To advise and make recommendations to the Governor and to the Legislature on issues, policies and programs relating to women;
  • To evaluate and monitor legislation pending in the Legislature on issues relating to women and make recommendations concerning such legislation to the Governor and the Legislature;
  • To maintain contact and collaborate with the appropriate federal, state, local, and international agencies concerned with the status of women;
  • To perform such other functions and duties as imposed upon it by law or as are assigned to it by the Governor and the Legislature.
